Twenty years ago I attended my grandfather's funeral (Joseph L. Hannigan) and got to meet my cousins for the first time. My father was also Joseph L. Hannigan his eldest son, and my uncle James Hannigan was his brother. After the funeral, I offered to give my two younger brothers and my two cousins a lift in my car to the luncheon afterwards.
Suddenly I looked in my rear view mirror and saw a police car waving me over. The officer came to my window and asked for my license. Then he asked the names of my passengers. My youngest brother spoke first, "My name is Brian Hannigan, followed by my other brother who said, "I am Joseph Hannigan." He then looked at my two cousins and said, "And who are you two?" The first cousin said, "I am Joseph Hannigan," and the second said, "I am Brian Hannigan." The officer indicated we were a bunch of wise guys and asked to see our identification. He had to agree: Hannigan's have no imagination! Thank goodness, I was named after my mother's father!,

James Francis Hannigan, born in Queens on October 26, 1929, took delight in telling that it was news of his birth that caused the stock market to crash three days later. A next-door neighbor on 211th Place, who watched Jim grow up and saw him come back regularly to look after his father, remarked that of the four children, Jim was the last one he would have expected to be so attentive. Unlike many youths sent to Elmira, Jim actually "learned his lesson" in the form of some useful skills and that it is a good thing to be a productive member of society. It was at Brooklyn Prep, where he finished high school, that he learned to admire the Jesuit custom of being happy for a deceased brother, knowing he had gone to the joy of being with the Lord. Jim's first two marriages were blessed with seven terrific offspring. The third saw the beginning of his sobriety, and the last blessed Janet for 33 years. Jim worked hard, played golf, rooted for the New York teams and could dance your feet off! He was an amazing example of a naturally grouchy person with the gift of a sense of humor. He seldom wanted to go where there would be a crowd, but always had a good time once he found someone there to swap stories with. He was a true jack-of-all trades, but unlike the cliche, he was officially a Master Mechanic with Cadillac for 36 years. (And he could probably have built a house from the ground up, if he'd had to.) Jim's most precious gift to the world was his ability to make each person he met feel special and uniquely important.. and he could usually "leave 'em laughing."

From the time I was a little girl, the one thing that has never changed about my Uncle Jimmy is his love of a good joke! He always had several new jokes to tell whenever I saw him. It always amazed me that he could remember them all! I would try so hard to remember at least one that he told me to share with a friend, but I always screwed it up! Thank you Uncle Jimmy for putting a smile on my face whenever we were together. I look forward to someday seeing you again and hearing all your new "Heaven" jokes! I am so sorry to hear of Uncle Jimmy's passing. May you find comfort in knowing that his suffering is now over, and he is in heaven with his parents, and his brother and sister.
