A loving Mother and Grandmother, Registered Nurse, passionate gardener and devout
Catholic, Pura Chen passed away Tuesday, June 8th. She was born on June 16th, 1923 and
grew up in Alaminos Pangasinan, the Philippines. Pura emigrated to the United States in 1952
and pursued postgraduate nursing studies at Columbia University. It was there that she met
her future husband Anthony Chen, who became a renowned children's book illustrator. Pura
worked as a Registered Nurse at Elmhurst Hospital (Mount Sinai), culminating her career as the
Head Nurse of the Gynecologic Nursing Department, and achieving numerous accolades for
her caring commitment to her patients. Pura loved her fellow human beings and delighted in
making friends wherever she went. She enjoyed dancing and practicing Tai Chi. Pura loved to
work in the earth, growing beautiful flowers and vegetables to share with her friends and family.
She had a long standing love/hate relationship with the Yankees. Mother of Richard and David,
she is survived by David, his wife Lefa, and Granddaughter Kaitlyn. She is loved and will be
dearly missed.
