Linda (Woodill) Cromheecke posted a condolence

I remember going out to visit Billy and Pat and my 5 cousins at least once a month with my Aunt Lily (Billy's Mom) by bus with my sister. It was always very active and full of life compared to my own family's household on Sunday's. My Mother, Vera, had a part-time job working at Astoria Manor and my Dad was taking care of his elderly Mother and Aunt doing errands. So, going with Aunt Lily's was such a treat. After a full day of playing with my cousins and having dinner, Billy would drop whatever he was doing and drive us back to Jackson Heights. He had a Big Heart and I loved Billy's up-beat attitude. Whenever the SHAMKIN family celebrated, it was always with good food and the family consisted of the Shamkin's, Novick's, Smerechniak's, Woodill's, Shields and whatever close friends or other relatives were around. When Billy tried living in Washington state where my family moved to, he jokingly said, "you would have to be dead or retired to live in Tacoma, WA". Washington didn't have his favorite NY Yankee's or even a professional Football team at the time...and so...I couldn't blame him.
My love to all our Family, Love, Linda (Woodill) Cromheecke

Bill and Doreen would often send cards to dad for different occasions and would call him regularly. Last summer when I placed dad in an assisted living facility I called Bill and asked him If he could call dad to cheer him up. Bill happily agreed and made the call. Bill called me back to say that dad was complaining that he had no "scratch " to tip the staff ! After a good laugh Bill assured me that he was popping a $20.00 bill into an envelope to make dad happy. This is the same man who went out and bought his uncle Walter a complete Yankees warmup up suit during his visit to Long Island a few years ago. Bill would do anything for his uncle Walt. Bill has left a legacy of love, generosity and friendship to all those who had the good fortune of knowing him.
During the wake Pat told me that dad loaned Bill his car so they could go off on their honeymoon and that she will never forget that gesture. It seems that Bill never forgot that as well. That's our million dollar Bill!
We are so fortunate to have this wonderful family and to have so many good memories!
I love you Bill! Rest in peace kiss in' cousin.

I met Billy back to January 2004 during a family reunion organised by Christina and hosted by Michael on Tortolla, BVI. We played chess, drank rum and enjoyed the Caribbean sun. Two things I remember about him: a great bright smile and how fond he was about his wife

I absolutely love Bill!! He was a very special step father to me. I will really miss him, but am so blessed at the many great times we had together. Bill was the life of the party, he always welcomed everyone into his home, and had such a generous heart. Bill would go to great lengths to make sure that everyone was comfortable, having a good time, and happy. That is all Bill wanted. He wanted to make everyone happy. He didn't want conflict, never spoke a negative comment about anyone, and was always optimistic. With Bill, the bottle was ALWAYS half full. He saw the brighter side of everything. Even while he was ill, he always managed to crack a smile, and show his strength through the struggle. I will always remember Bill for his loving affection toward me, acceptance as his step-daughter, and the love that he gave my mom through the years. I thank God for the time we had with him, and his spirit will live in my heart forever.
Rest in Peace Bill!!
Love, Tedra, Andrew and family

Whenever I think of Bill, I can't help but smile. He had the most generous heart and spirit of any peson I've ever known and he had a way of making people feel like they had known him forever. He had a gift.
I have many fond memories of him growing up and I will cherish them forever. I always felt like he and his brother Ron, were more like my brothers rather than my cousins. I was the baby in the family and the only girl for a long time, so they took great care of me and soiled me rotten.
I feel truly blessed to have had Billy in my life and he wil be in my heart forever. He was special.
L:ove you Billy!

Bill Smerechniak to me was known as Cousin Billy or Big Billy (due to his senior status). When I was a kid he was an adult, married with 3, then 4, and then 5 kids. I can remember the excitement in the family when Laura, their little girl, was born.
My Cousin Billy's place seemed to be the gathering place for extended family. I felt so grown up as Big Billy with a smile and easy manner would let Little Billy (2 years older than I was) and I venture off on our own. There was always so much activity and good energy when I went to visit. I can remember many fun times playing games in the basement or heading off with Little Billy to fly remote control airplanes. Big Billy always made me feel welcomed and loved.
The family connection continued into my adult life. At 19 my future husband, Jeff, and I took a road trip to New York to see the sights and family. After a living room chat Cousin Billy and Pat left the room and came back in to announce that they were moving to Washington State, and asked if we would take Laura and Danny back with us. The spontaneity of this decision added to our road trip adventure and was a heartwarming reminder that we are all family. The loving spirit behind his decision-making opened the door to cherished family memories. It was on the road trip back to Washington State with two little cousins in the back seats that I came to know Danny and Laura as well as Jeff in a different light. I fell in love with Jeff on that trip back.
I'll miss Cousin Billy's generous and loving nature. I cherish the memories of the times I spent with my cousin and the opportunities he gave me to build memories with my extended family. I am honored to be a part of this spirited and always very loving family. My heart goes out to you all, especially during this time, and my home is open to all of you always.
Much love,
Debi and the Koch Clan
