Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
James P. Drohan Sr., 89, of East Rockaway, succumbed to ongoing health issues on December 4, 2015. Beloved husband for 63 years to Ruth M. (nee Albrecht) and devoted dad to James P. Drohan, Jr. and his wife Janet, and Diane M. Drohan. Doting grandfather to John Clarke, Aileen Drohan, Dylan Pentoney, Thomas Pentoney, Catherine Pentoney, James J. Drohan and Magdalene Drohan. Caring uncle to many nieces and nephews from New York to Hawaii.
Born in Brooklyn, New York to Nicholas and Bridget Drohan (nee Dunford) he was a 58 year East Rockaway resident. A proud WWII veteran, he served in the US Army from 1944 to 1946. He worked as an insurance adjustor for Royal Globe Indemnity Insurance Company for 44 years in New York City and Long Island. He was a long-time member of East Rockaway American Legion Post 958 and served as Post Adjutant in the past. He had been a long-time East Rockaway Republican committeeman and had served as a past President of the East Rockaway Republican Club. He was well known to the "Letters to the Editor" section of many newspapers for decades and kept the East Rockaway public librarians busy with weekly book requests. He is preceded in death by his brothers John and Walter and his sister Mary Short. In 1997 he, along with his sister Mary, fulfilled their ambition to visit the ancestral homes of their late parents, both natives of Dungarven, County Waterford, Ireland. He and his beloved wife, Ruth enjoyed many years of winter vacations in Key Colony Beach, FL and summer vacations in the Poconos. He enjoyed lively discourse on politics, books, movies, horse racing and current events. But, what he enjoyed most was challenging and encouraging his grandchildren.
