Obituary
Obituary of Gus Markides
Please share a memory of Gus to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with great sadness that the family of Gus Markides announces his sudden passing on October 26, 2020, at the age of 81. Patriarch of the family, he will be forever and lovingly remembered by his wife of sixty years, Marilyn, his two children Mitchell and Michelle and their spouses Rosa and Eric respectively. He was adored by his five grandchildren Alessandra (and her husband Charlie), Gabriella, Matthew, Hannah and Jason, all of whom he adored in turn and doted on with pride and admiration. He is additionally survived by his loving sisters Catherine (Angelo) and Georgia.
He was happiest surrounded by family, whom he loved above all else. As husband, father, grandfather and brother, his wisdom, encouragement and support for his loved ones was unparalleled. Always at the head of the table, he was also the leader of the family, literally and spiritually. He so enjoyed telling his stories and jokes surrounded by eager listeners. He shared his life with his loved ones, and his passing leaves us all with a huge hole in our lives and an empty chair at the table. But he will always be in our hearts and our souls, a figure larger than life, he will be eternally missed.
From his roots in Far Rockaway to his home in East Rockaway to his cabin in the Catskills, it was always family first and foremost. But he made time for other important endeavors in his life, proudly serving the NYC Auxiliary Police for 50 years, recently promoted to Inspector. He also served as commander of his local American Legion Chapter, and a proud flag-carrying veteran of the US army. He loved his old cars and it seemed like he attended just about every car show he could.
He was a friend and mentor to many, and was widely respected and admired.
