Obituary of John J. Hess

John J. Hess, Jr., of Lynbrook, NY passed away peacefully on April 25, 2023, surrounded by his family after an illness. He lived 76 years full of life and leaves a towering 6’2” hole in his family’s lives. John was the loving husband of Teresa (Parris) Tuohy Hess, whom he married in 1988. He was a devoted father to Melissa Hess (David), Jessica McEvoy (Craig), Gregory Tuohy (Belkis), and Patrick Tuohy (Danielle), and loving grandfather of Carly, Kayla, and Chase McEvoy, and Abigail Tuohy. He is joined in Heaven by his dear sister Christine, brother Daniel, father John Sr., and mother Jean (Farrington) Hess. John will be sorely missed by his sisters Jean Gutierrez and Laurel Santora, nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, in laws, and many long time friends he considered family. John had an affable presence and left an unforgettable impression on everyone he met. He was a man who saw the good in everyone and unconditionally loved his family and friends. His loss is devastating to his family and friends, who will carry with them his example of showing respect to everyone in their lives. “Big John” was born and raised in Rockaway, a definitive product of the Peninsula. He lived for 22 years in the West End of Long Beach until moving to Lynbrook in 2004. He and his children made great memories during many visits to his father in Plattsburgh, NY. John retired as a letter carrier from the Woodmere Post Office in 2011, where he leaves many friends. His route took him to the Woodmere Fire Department, where he would enjoy afternoon breaks with many friends he made at the department. A stalwart fan of the Giants, Rangers, and Knicks. John enjoyed a friendly rivalry with his sons’ dueling New York teams. They all shared a love of the Mets and delighted in watching games together with his wife on SNY or at Citi Field
