My condolences to the Sparandara family. Coach Spa was simply the best. I am shocked he is gone. He helped me get into Princeton where I competed on the track team. I remember his kindness and I especially remember his red (I believe) Volkswagen Beetle that he drove and dropped me off at home sometimes after practice or a track meet. He will forever be in my mind and heart.

I was a member of the LHS English Department and taught with Tony for many years. We taught stories and dramatized our own stories daily. I recently learned Tony was the final editor of Larry O'Neill's pools and had the right of veto. In my case I know he rarely exercised that right and I was continually punished for being a good sport.
We lost touch for too many years, but I was so glad Jerry and I came back to the Sparandaras' lives. Tony , even though he looked like a product of the 60s in the 60s was old school. He was a family man and a dedicated teacher and coach. He was also very funny and made everyone around him laugh. He carried his sense of humor with him to the end.

My condolences to the Sparandara family. While I only spoke with Coach Sparandara a few times, my son Matt spent countless hours with him during the 4 years he coached him on the LHS track team. Coach Spa was one of the most positive role models and mentors in Matt's life- encouraging him not only to achieve his longest jump taking him to All-County status (I still remember the huge smile on Coach's face) but to strive in his education and life as well. I am forever grateful. He will be missed.

My sincere condolences to Mr. Sparandara's entire family. Mr. S. was my English teacher in high school at Lawrence. There were few classes I enjoyed as much as I enjoyed English with Mr. S. He taught much more than English. He taught life's lessons. He taught students to explore thought processes, and he creatively mentored those who worked on the Mental Pabulum (school newspaper), or pushed those whose works were worthy of inclusion. He had a love for teaching, and it was palpable in his students' hearts. Poetry was the highlight of the class. Mr. S. could read and explain poetry in such a way, it just pulled me right in. His best friend was also my teacher: Mr. Gabe Uhlar. So, I had the best of both worlds when I had S. and U. (as I would call them). The funniest thing was waiting for the track and field crew to pass my house every afternoon as I sat by the driveway, cheering them on. Great memories, great guy. The icing on the cake was when I got to meet Mrs. S. who was subbing at Number 1 School when my little girls were attending there. Of course I was kvelling over her husband to her. But she knew the gold prize she had in her life already. How lucky you were to have a wonderful person in your lives. You were all blessed. WE were all blessed.

To the entire Sparandara family - Tony left a great mark on myself and my entire family. He had such a positive influence on people. To Melanie, TJ, Jenny and Michael, please know how much he loved you! He never stopped talking about his family and how proud and how much he loved them all. It was an honor to work and be a friend to Tony.
