Obituary of Charles H. Formont

Formont-Charles H. (Charlie) on October 21, 2009 of East Rockaway, NY Former East Rockaway Mayor Beloved husband of Lorraine. Loving father of Christopher (Erica). Cherished grandfather of Hailey and Kaycee. Devoted brother of Ethel Gilloon, (Dan), and brother in law of Mildred A. Pagliaro. Fond uncle of Donna, Danny, Kenny, Joseph and Andrew. All of East Rockaway is saddened by the sudden passing of their former beloved Mayor Charles H. Formont. Charlie, was a life long village resident and a direct descendant of Elbridge Gerry, signer of the Declaration of Independence and former Vice President of the United States, under James Madison. Charlie served 21 years on the NYC Police force, with distinction, all in the 20th precinct. He was a proud member of the East Rockaway Fire Department and rescue squad for the past 49 years. He was past President and current member of the East Rockaway Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the Georgia Wright Animal Foundation. He was a founding member of the Joseph R. Pagliaro memorial charity, People Helping People. In keeping with his family lineage, he served eight years as East Rockaway Village trustee (1987 - 1995) and eight years as Mayor (1995 - 2003). Mayor Formont left his imprint on every part of East Rockaway, a village he truly loved. As Mayor his record of accomplishment is unparalleled. He initiated the recycling program, expanded the Senior Center and East Rockaway Library, computerized Village Hall, refurbished the Veterans Memorial, had the roads raised to reduce flooding, and secured the grants that launched the Waterfront revitalization project of the Talfour Boat Basin. Amazingly, all of these projects and many others were accomplished with little or no tax increase to the village residents.
