Yvonne Powell was born in Brooklyn, NY on August 25, 1932. She was the daughter of the late Mr. Charles and Azilee Bingley. Both served the Hiram& United Grand Masonic Lodge faithfully until their passing. Yvonne began her life of dancing at the age of five as tap dancer. She performed on the radio, on a program called Green pastures, and continued to perform and work at many Harlem dance clubs until she was 18. She even performed with actor Juan Hernandez. In 1950, Yvonne entered the Kings County Hospital of Nursing in Brooklyn, NY and went on to receive her BA of Art’s at Queens College. Yvonne married Robert A. Powell in 1958 and later had three children, Trebor(who preceded her on her journey home) Moira and Robert. Yvonne and Robert divorced but remained close friends throughout her life. A testament of the love, friendship and respect they had for one another. While her children were young, Yvonne left nursing and accepted a teaching position at the local elementary school her children attended. After the children graduated she resumed her nursing career. In true Yvonne fashion, she applied for a Clinical Case Management position at Proctor & Gamble after submitting a resume which simply stated “Have car, can teach and will travel”. She was hired and worked for many years serving patients in the tri-state area. After many years in retirement and at the age of 73, Yvonne returned to the workforce as a Nurse serving individuals with developmental disabilities receiving residential care. She also became a mentor to many of the direct care staff and management staff. Not only was Yvonne a dedicated worker, she was also a faithful servant of GOD. She was a long time active member of the Middle Collegiate Church in NYC. She also served as a member of the Order of the Eastern Star’s for many years.
