To Mr. Sasso's dear and beloved family,
I first met Mr. Sasso when I was in 7th grade during the time that I was in the junior high musical. He was so complimentary, kind, and gentle and I always felt safe and respected in his presence. He later was my art teacher and I always appreciated how encouraging and supportive he was, especially because I didn't find drawing or sculpture easy. With his help, I managed to carve a decent looking pig out of a bar of Ivory soap!
In my last year at Clarke, 1979, some of my friends were in one of his afternoon classes and I had a free period. I ended up being a regular and very welcome attendee. I enjoyed being in the environment he created.
He was a true gentleman and one that I have always remembered with affection and appreciation.

Martin Sasso was a wonderful person highly respected by my husband and myself. I was a teacher at W. Tresper Clarke when Marty was and we went to a number of events together. We were both performers in a faculty play “Where’s Charley”. (around 1960). My husband Jack McGowan knew Marty due to their work in the East Meadow Teachers Association. We both thought that. Marty was such a fine person.
What is strange is that I remembered that Jan. 11 was the birthday of some people I knew. - one of whom was Marty. So, I typed his name into my iPhone and was dumbstruck by the article that came up. And further, my husband died just nine days before Marty, and both are interred at Holy Rood. Both men were actively practicing their faith through their lives.
So many memories came flooding into my mind so I want to send (although belated) my most sincere condolences to the family.
With my prayers,
Charlene McGowan

I wasn't a very talented artist, not at all! But I wanted to be. Mr. Sasso showed such humor and patience with me. He was a good and kind teacher and person! He was my teacher over 50 years ago and I've not forgotten him!

I had Mr. Sasso in my senior year at Clarke and I remember his class well. He was a kind man, and I will always remember his soothing and happy nature. I enjoyed his class very much, and after graduating in 1977, I went on to have a 20 year career in graphic design. Even though life caused career plans to change , I’ve never stopped enjoying my art or the creativity that came with it. I will always have a special place in my heart for Mr. Sasso. My sincerest sympathies to his family.
